I just love Howitzers. The damage from exploding shells is awesome. Set the guns up behind your lines of Infantry and just let them blast away. Smoking craters in the ground and bodies flying everywhere - what else do you need!

I've been rolling with 3-4 cannon or 3 cannon/2 howitzer, 2-3 cavalry and the rest infantry. I'm thinking of experimenting with a larger artillery contingent, especially after seeing firsthand just how devestating howitzer barrages are.
Also, don't leave home without artillerie a pied. They are a must have for the range, accuracy and inspiration they provide. If my 12 pounders weren't so experienced, i'd have disbanded them long ago.

Same here Halberd
I just love the sight of hundreds of infantry advancing toward the enemy with howitzer shells exploding in front of them ( my favorite combo, infantry and howitzers)
Plus also the awesome power of infantry volleys, cavalry can take ground, artillery can defend ground(for a time) but only infantry can hold ground. I'm not one to attack ground because i've always found that i get massacred when i advance.
I am experimenting with more artillery and cavalry though

I generally only bring two units of cavalry just to catch routing units. On the other hand I have lots of light infantry, line infantry and artillery.

Out of interest, has anyone tried out something along the lines of a sort of parthian army with lots of say chasseurs a cheval and horse artillery? in empire I've found that if light dragoons got behind me, i would be in trouble because it's take ages to realign around. though the only troops in napoleon i can find so far that fire while mounted are the chasseurs.

I'm not sure thats wise Gazsmith since u have no art or cavalry support and are vulnerable to almost anything light infantry or anything with a longer range, you can't attack up hill against any kind of art because you'll be blown to bits by artillery and canister and then you'll be only able to charge because of your low or nil strength at the end.
I shall retract this statement if it turns out you got the ten wins in a row medal

I've found the same thing, but also I like to zoom down and sea what is going on, being one for seeing routed enemies massacred in search of the decisive victory. Which of course gives me an achievement.
They are actually fighting, not the whole units, but just the dudes within range of the cavalry, so its not a good idea to attack a large blob of dudes perhaps because you might find yourself attacked, annoying but realistic because I've never been satisfied with, say in M2TW, that a hundred of those poor peasants would allow themselves to be crushed by ten of my general's retinue. I've actually had one of my units actually rout themselves from losses via fighting routed men, luckily they weren't pursued themselves. Luckily also I think the effectiveness of routing infantry that are fighting is reduced to a tenth or a fifth of their normal effectiveness
