NTW has a curious glitch in gameplay regarding cavalry that effectively renders cavalry poor value and ruins gameplay.
Actually there are a few issues with cavalry: the effect of the infantry square and the susceptibility of cavalry to gunfire.
Cavalry are soooo fragile.
One only needs to show a musket to cavalry and half the cavalry will die.
But the game killer is this:
When cavalry charges line infantry, even if the infantry are terribly disorganized when the cavalry hit, the infantry will still effectively kill the cavalry unit if they form square.
Even if the infantry are in line formation at the time of impact, the moment the player clicks the "form square" button, the game considers the infantry to be in square formation and the cavalry are doomed.
This makes cavalry pretty useless, especially if one's opponent has no lone artillery to slaughter and a lot of line infantry.
Creative Assembly really need to fix this.
If infantry are not already set in square when a cavalry charge strikes it, then there should exist a possibility that the infantry break.
The other day I played a game where my cavalry routed all my opponent's cavalry only to be then faced with resolute infantry squares everywhere they went.
Eventually all my cavalry were killed off by gunfire; they were in effect totally useless.
One can say that they should have been used to force the opposing infantry into square, after which my infantry could pound the squares; this sounds great in theory but the reality is that my opponent did NOT need to place his infantry into square until my cavalry had charged home; at that point of course the infantry become cavalry slaughterers extraordinaire and the cavalry are doomed.
