I'm starting to work my way through the historical battles and they are quite good actually.
There are four difficulty levels:
Easy
Medium
Hard (silver - win 5 of these and you get another achievement)
Very Hard (gold - win 5 of these and you get another achievement)
The plan I worked out was to move my three cannons to destroy the building that the Grenzers occupy. This kills the Grenzers in one fell swoop. If you set up your cannons right (used two and then one), they be able to fire straight down the main street at their cannon unit as well as the very bunched infantry units. I set up my third arty unit to the right of the battle line, near the river, so they could fire straight down the banks of the river at units preparing to cross the bridge.
Just north of the town is a shallow ford. This is critical because if you don't use it, the Austrian general will get away. I usually move two Dragoons, my carbine-armed cav, Chasseurs and my third cannon over here. The Austrians will defend this with 2/3 units but your cannon will make short work of them. Cross this river and set up on the far road so you can ambush the general as he makes his getaway.
You can't depend on your cannons to kill all the soldiers in the village so you need to attack so you win before the timer runs out. Having forces on both sides of the river allows you to carry out a perfect pincer movement.
Anybody else do it differently?

Nelson was the typical Englishman: hot-headed, impetuous, unreliable, passionate, emotional & boisterous. Wellington was the typical Irishman: cold, reserved, calculating, unsentimental & ruthless" - George Bernard Shaw
